A Day at the Fashion Minority Report Careers Day Event
The 15th April marked a big moment for the Fashion Minority Report, as we held our first ever careers event (but definitely not the last!). We brought together emerging and aspiring talent from minority backgrounds across the UK, giving them the opportunity to speak one to one with members of leading fashion names such as Aesop, Selfridges, HUGO BOSS, Dweet, Deckers Brands and Tapestry.
It was an important chance for creatives to gain access to the fashion industry, learn about leading businesses in fashion, with opportunities for entry into the attendees’ chosen career path. Throughout the day, we facilitated conversations, talks and workshops such as how to start out as a freelancer, developing your CV and building the foundations of your career through retail.

Conversations That Could Shape Careers
Talking to representatives from our brand partners such as Selfridges, Tapestry, Dweet and more, attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with HR teams and company representatives, discussing not just job openings but also what these esteemed brands look for in new talent. Providing real insights into the company cultures and what it takes to succeed there.
Workshops
The workshops and talks offered at the Careers Day were both practical and enlightening. The CV clinic was a particular hit; participants left with stronger resumes and new strategies to present themselves effectively to potential employers. It was great to see the immediate boost in confidence among attendees.
“Starting out as a Freelancer” was another highlight. Freelancing can seem daunting, but hearing from successful freelancers like Kiran Manak and Michael Edelmann made it feel more accessible. They shared honest advice and strategies that resonated with those looking to forge their own paths in the creative industries.
The “Reframing Retail” session offered an enlightening fireside chat with Lewis Bloyce, a former buyer at Browns. Lewis shared his fascinating career journey and provided a fresh perspective on the role of a buyer amidst the current challenges in the fashion industry, such as declining sales and store closures. He highlighted how buyers are crucial in reshaping the retail experience, not just by selecting standout products but also by crafting a retail environment that captures consumer interest in a competitive market. Lewis’s insights revealed how roles in retail can be a launchpad for greater career aspirations, equipping professionals with essential skills that are highly valued across the fashion industry.

Evening Insights and Networking
At the end of the day, Daniel Peters, founder of the Fashion Minority Report, led a panel discussion with Bianca Saunders who founded her eponymous label in 2017 and Vanissa Antonious, founder of accessories brand NEOUS. Giving attendees the opportunity to learn about each founder’s journey and what starting a fashion brand can look like in terms of business and personally. The intimate setting allowed for networking and for people to discuss their own aspirations and challenges, turning inspiration into actionable plans.
